MAKAYLAH CLARK

Statement
Through vibrant colors and specific blends of mixed media, I explore cross-cultural interconnectivity by intentionally combining historical and contemporary Imagery. I draw inspiration from ancient histories, such as Korean, West African, Irish, and Navajo cultures, among many others. My work also reflects my contemporary inspirations, including animated movies, fantasy novels, fashion, and a never-ending list of visual artists. In many ways, my work reflects the incredibly diverse world we live in, showcasing the new frequency with which culture is shared due to the internet and continued migration. Just like the variety of cultures I draw from, I use a variety of materials, including acrylic, gouache, colored pencils, gemstones, stickers, glitter, and wax pastels. I combine these elements to create figurative work that draws viewers in with new yet familiar imagery, encouraging them to explore new cultures or techniques within the work. I make a familiar framework to invite further conversation that not only highlights our similarities but also celebrates our differences.
