Statement

I explore themes of Black Joy, cultural exchange, and my identity by appropriating motifs of historical, fictional, and personal iconography. It is important to me that I create art that is centered around Black Joy - is an underrepresented genre in American art. I want Black people to see themselves in positive or non-stereotypical narratives. For other people of color to see appreciation of their culture and contributions to American culture. Additionally, for white people to see a broader narrative of what it means to be Black. I connect my African American and Irish heritage with West African and traditional Korean history to create a complex narrative. I have been learning about a variety of cultures, traditions, folk tales and history. By combining fantasy and real history I create a world of my own that highlights a positive narrative. by utilizing character design, iconography, literature and a interdisciplinary of materials I create fantastical pieces of spaces that tells a deeply complex story. By learning about more cultures I continue to push myself to create more complex, intricate and meaningful works of art that work to showcase a radical new narrative in American art.
